September 16, 2009 - Rotary Point was the site of today's Dedication of the Guardian Angel Memorial. A sad reality...Louisiana's Infant death rate. The time has come for our communities to take action. The future of Louisiana's babies and the overall health of our state are in peril. We understand the need to hear the voices of our most vulnerable and acknowledge our loss. When a family loses a child, it is also a loss for the entire community. There is now a special place that acknowledges our lost children and offers a site for reflection and consolation. See pictures in Photo Gallery under Rotary Point.

October 21, 2009 - In recognition of World Polio Day, October 23rd, the Rotary Club of Lafayette South is donating $1,750.00 to the Rotary Foundation for polio eradication (see picture in Photo Gallery under Donations). At the same time, Rotary International is celebrating a major milestone reached in its global fundraising campaign to eradicate polio – nearly $100 million raised toward its $200 million challenge.
As part of a $355 million challenge grant awarded to Rotary by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary clubs worldwide are aiming to raise a total of $200 million by 2012. The funding will provide critical support to polio eradication activities, including the distribution of a new, more effective bivalent polio vaccine that was recently approved for use in the coming months, for countries still battling the disease in parts of Africa and South Asia.
Since 1985, eradicating polio worldwide has been Rotary’s top philanthropic goal. In addition to the funds announced today, Rotary has contributed more than $800 million and countless volunteer hours to the protection of more than two billion children in 122 countries. The disease remains endemic in just four countries – Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Nigeria – although other countries remain at risk for imported cases. “Our club goal was $1,000 a year for the next three years” said club president Ken Stansbury, “but we all know or remember someone afflicted with polio and we wanted to do a little more.”
Polio is a highly infectious disease that causes paralysis and is sometimes fatal. As there is no cure, the best protection is prevention. For as little as 60 cents per vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. After an international investment of more than $6.22 billion, and the successful engagement of over 200 countries and 20 million volunteers, polio could be the first disease of the 21st century to be eradicated.
